This is the first time the bvfa has given a football stadium an award for outstanding fire safety. The Bavarian state Minister for Consumer Affairs, Dr. Otmar Bernhard, along with bvfa representatives presented the Sprinkler Protected award. “Fire safety is of crucial importance for the welfare of fans in sports venues. The Allianz Arena has an outstanding level of protection. This serves as a model for other stadiums”, commented the bvfa president, Thomas Jetzlaff, at the award ceremony.

The Munich stadium company (München Stadion GmbH) manager Peter Kerspe showed his satisfaction with the planning and implementation of this policy, “This award is a great honour for the Allianz Arena and those involved in the project. Fire safety is an extremely important part of running our arena and we are proud of our contribution to protecting the spectators.

This is the second major award for the Allianz Arena in the area of fire safety following on from the German structural fire safety award “ Deutschen Brandschutzpreis” two years ago. This confirms the positive findings in the consumer association Stiftung Warentest report on this issue. A decisive factor in the award is the sprinkler system which provides fire protection in all parts of the stadium including the VIP and subterranean areas.

For the last fifteen years the bvfa. has been presenting the Sprinkler Protected award to public buildings that exceed the minimum required fire safety standards and also include the installation of a sprinkler system to protect spectators. Sprinkler Protected is therefore the leading award for preventative fire safety measures in Germany. The prize aims to increase fire safety awareness and improve the protection of human life in public buildings.

Visitors to the Munich Allianz Arena are protected by four central sprinkler points and nearly 20,000 sprinklers installed throughout the stadium. The water supply is regulated by two sprinkler pumps can provide water for fire fighting through the mains network at a pressure of 144 psi.

Two water tanks, with a capacity of 425 cubic metres, supply the sprinkler systems. If the water pressure in the supply pipes drops 17 measuring stations sound an alarm which is passed on immediately to the four fire alarm centres.
